Army Captain Jose Espinoza's children were surprised Oct. 14 when he unexpectedly showed up at Centre's pep rally. The eight siblings were overjoyed and vied for hugs. Espinoza returned to Germany on Tuesday, where he is a logistics officer for the 212th Combat Support Hospital.
Joe Lovelady, golf course superintendent, peers out of his skunk-hunting gear Tuesday at Marion Country Club. His wife, Karlene, said, "All you can see is his eyeballs, and it looks like he's there to rob the whole county." Lovelady has no such plans, but he recently bagged 20 skunks that were damaging fairways in search of bug larva.
These sweet potatoes look huge in the hands of 5-year-old Treygan Miesse and 19-month-old Tristen Miesse, but even in the hands of adults these tubers are massive: Treygan's weighs 3 pounds, 13 ounces, and Tristen's is 3 pounds, 2 ounces. Treygan helped to unearth the sweet potatoes from the garden of his grandmother, Laurie Miesse of Marion.
Centre's C.J. Thompson, right, was among the top 10 finishers at a regional boys' cross-country meet Saturday in Wichita. Thompson finished ninth with a run of 19 minutes, 37.2 seconds. The junior will compete for the second consecutive year in the state cross-country meet Saturday at Wamego.
