Tim Newfield, convicted of the 1979 kidnapping and murder of Peabody banker Grant Avery, will be released on parole Friday.

Bill Meyer, editor and publisher of the Marion County Record, Hillsboro Star-Journal, and Peabody Gazette-Bulletin, is this year’s winner of the Eugene Cervi Award, highest lifetime achievement award of the International Society of Weekly Newspaper Editors. Meyer, the only other Kansas editor ever to receive the award, was honored this week at the organization’s international convention at Missouri Southern State College in Joplin, Mo.

A reunion of the descendants of Gilbert and Mabel McCullough was held this weekend in Marion, the site of the family’s “roots.”

A team of basketball players from the Marion area won first place in the Mid-America youth basketball tournament. Team members are Courtney Geis, Caitlin O’Dell, Ashley Secrest. Amy Tajchman, Rebecca Savage, Molly Rhodes, Amber Richmond, and Emmy Bowers. Coaches are Charles Tajchman and Clyde Secrest.

Patty McLinden of Marion visited Washington, D.C., in June during the 90th anniversary of the Girl Scouts of America celebration. She was with a group from Flint Hills Council, which included nine girls and four adults.
