Marion Kiwanians were told Monday noon that Marion County Hospital District Auxiliary will open a thrift store in Marion. The shop will be located on the ground floor of the Masonic building.

The board of directors of Marion-Florence USD 408 are in the process of designing new facilities for the district that include an auditorium, gymnasium, and indoor and outdoor swimming pools.

Winners of the VFW’s Patriot’s Pen contest were announced Friday. First place winners were Connor Thierolf, seventh grade, and Parker Ash, eighth grade. Second place winners were seventh grader Matt Sprowls and eighth grader Louis Holt.

Santa Claus will make his first appearance of the holiday season from 1 to 3 p.m. Friday at his house on the vacant lot between Duckwall’s and Suffield’s.

The five children of Frank and Nellie Richmond met Oct. 17-25 in Blairsville, Georgia, for a family reunion. The group, which included Dale and Tootsie Snelling of Marion, enjoyed the scenery of the Blue Ridge Mountains and its various attractions.

James “Butch” Cogdill retired Friday after 43 years of service in the Marion County Road and Bridge Department. His first “real job,” he started with the county at the age of 18.
