In keeping with Old Settlers’ Day theme, “Marion County Courthouse, A Century of Service,” six individuals were chosen by Marion Kiwanis Club to represent the dedicated men and women who have served Marion County at the courthouse. Those six are Gerry Grentz, Dorothy Lawrence, LaVaughn Klose, Dorothy Melcher, Max Hayen, and June Jost.

Mayor Martin Tice and Marion City Council have proclaimed Saturday as Molly Holub Day. In conjunction with Old Settlers’ Day, Molly will ride in the parade and attend activities in Central Park.

A feature story in this issue tells about LaVonda Hett Rothman, MHS alum of Class of 1966, and husband Lew, who have built a successful retail cigar business in New York City.

Marion High School crowned homecoming royalty prior to Fridays’ Marion-Haven football game. Participating in the ceremonies were Emalee Versch, 2005 MHS homecoming queen, Casey Nelson, 2005 king candidate, attendants John Barr III, Kyle Hett, Erin Carr, and Erin Richmond, and crown bearer Chisholm Waner.

Vernon and Arlene Bowers of Marion will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary Oct. 1 with a family dinner and with an extended RV trip to the southeast.
