An unusually warm Thursday afternoon, with temperatures in the high 60s, took a drastic turn Monday. Snow began blanketing Marion Monday night and was piled high Tuesday.

Gov. Sam Brownback declared Marion County in a State of Emergency effective at 6 a.m. Tuesday when single digit temperatures and winds topping 40 mph sent wind chills as low as 15 to 20 degrees below zero.

Marion High School Students of the Month of January are Seniors Dillon Richmond and Brenda Loftus.

Soldiers Jarred Helm and Bronson Shipman are shown holding a Kansas flag presented to them by the Geography Club of Marion Elementary School.

Helm, Shipman, and Tyler Mermis are scheduled to be deployed to Sudan this weekend and are to take the flag with them as a reminder of their home state.

Erin Meierhoff is the MHS Athlete of the Week. Guard Meierhoff drew a charge and picked up the ball for a steal to help win the game for the Lady Warriors Friday at Council Grove. Erin is the daughter of Thad and Janie Meierhoff of Marion.

Marion Advancement Campaign and Marion Country Club will host a Valentine’s celebration Saturday, Feb. 12, at the Community Center ballroom. A social time will begin at 6:30 p.m., followed by a prime rib dinner at 7 p.m.

The Women’s Auxiliary to James William Miesse Legion Post 22 is sponsoring a program, “Cell Phones for Soldiers,” a program to furnish phones for troops serving overseas who are in need of cell phones to call their families at home. The cell phones may be donated at Marion City Library and Marion banks.
