A group of Marion residents is organizing a Marion Farm and Art Market in Central Park, Marion, to be held from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesdays beginning May 4 through Oct. 12.

Committee members include Jeanice Thomas, Diana Costello, Colleen Hajek, Carol Laue, and Janie Meierhoff.

Student actors, confirmands from Marion, Hillsboro, and Centre schools, witnessed the tangible beginnings of their play, “The Passion and the Story of Father’s Kapaun,” on Sunday at USD 408 Performing Arts Center. The free performance will be April 20 during Holy Week.

Marion Mayor Mary Olson, dressed in a bonnet, dress, and apron reminiscent of 1861 when Marion became a city, is pictured as she presents Gov. Sam Brownback with a Marion sesquicentennial medallion. Rep. Bob Brookens joined them after the presentation.

Weightlifters from 23 Kansas schools competed in Marion Saturday at the 3A state power lifting championships. Marion junior Mikael Antoszyk finished first in state in the 123-pound class squat. He also won the clean and jerk with a lift of 235 pounds. Marion senior Randy Regnier won the 132-pound class squat at 295 and bench of 195. He also tied Patrick McCarty for first in the clean of 195.

An article by staff writer Adam Stewart tells of the unusual art medium used by a late Hillsboro resident, Max Heinrichs Sr. Heinrichs used pieces of carpet to make murals for several Holiday Inn motels in Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas, local businesses, the Holidome in Texas, and local churches.

Marion High School graduate TC Edwards will begin classes at Kingston University in London, England, in September. Edwards previously attended classes in Mexico, graduating from high school in Spain, and now will attend college in England.
