Dollar General will open its doors for Marion shoppers Sunday, albeit without much fanfare for now. A grand opening is planned in January, but the early opening will allow Marion residents to do Christmas shopping there.

More than 60 teams, representing grades three through six from 16 towns, will participate from now until Feb. 13 in Marion Basketball League, organized by Margo Yates. Teams come from as far away as Salina to play at the elementary and middle school and Sports and Aquatics Center gymnasiums.

A trio of Marion High School juniors — Aidan Cairns, Kaitlyn Goebel, and Cade Harms — approached the city council Monday to seek help in starting a community garden at the former saddle club building near the town’s big water tower. Half of the produce grown there will be donated to the local food bank.

Alvin and Arlene Hett of Hillsboro have placed 25 red Salvation Army donation kettles at businesses in Hillsboro, Marion, Florence, and Durham. They plan to have Salvation Army bell ringers Dec. 19 at the new Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market in Hillsboro.
