County officials have closed 190th Rd. between Pawnee and Old Mill Rds. because of continuing erosion of a Cottonwood River bank on the south side of the road. No schedule for repairing and reopening the road has been announced.

Marion City Council didn’t budge Monday on the asking price for a strip of land in Batt Industrial Park. Veterinarian Brendan Kraus has met twice with the council, offering to buy half of a lot that lies north of his business for half price so he may add parking and a kennel at Spur Ridge Veterinary Hospital. The city offered to sell the half lot at full price and offer a rebate if he ends up building the kennel.

Marion High School freshman Grace Overton created a massive Wildcat head over the summer for an entry bulletin board at Marion Middle School. Math instructor Deanna Thierolf had asked her to draw the school’s mascot after she and other teachers noticed Grace’s artistic talent.

A bevy of starters will return for Marion football coach Grant Theirolf this fall. On the line, Cade Harms, Jeremy Hett, Jarod McClendon, and Tyler Palic return from last year, and former starter Nathan Baldwin, sidelined by injury last year, also will be back. They will block for returning all-league running back Aaron Riggs. The team’s record last year was 7-2.

Going into fall, Marion’s volleyball team, which went 33-4 last year, is ranked 10th in the state in Class 3A. Returning starters for coach Brea Campell include Shelby Felvus, Kourtney Hansen, and Marrissa Jacobsen.
