At a meeting Sept. 1, a volunteer committee selected “Marion, the ‘best place I’ve seen’ to live, learn, work, visit, play, and retire” as its vision statement. Committee members said the statement focused on current and potential strengths such as convenient location, peaceful quality of life, good schools, varied businesses, tourist sites, recreational opportunities, and senior services.
Janet Post of Burns will perform at the Farm Bureau Arena during the Kansas State Fair, Sept. 11-20 in Hutchinson.
Marion Police Sgt. Garry Klose and John McMinn of McMinn’s Bicycle Service, Hillsboro, spoke to about 15 children Sept. 1 during a bicycle safety program. Marion Kiwanis Club sponsored the program, and plans to repeat the opportunity again in the future.
Miss Kansas 1997-98 Lesley Moss led the Florence Labor Day parade on Monday.
The Marion High School football team opened its season Friday with a sound trouncing at the hands of Moundridge 30 to 7. The Marion Middle School team defeated Derby Thursday by a score of 40 to 0.
Gov. Bill Graves notified Florence City officials in an Aug. 28 letter that they city would receive $72,000 through an urgent need community development block grant. The grant will fund removal of the former Horner Hotel on Main Street.
