10-and-unders win state title

After winning the district tournament in Buhler, the Cottonwood Valley League 10 and Under All-stars traveled to Fort Scott where they won the state tournament last weekend.

With players from Marion, Hillsboro, Council Grove, and Canton-Galva, the All-stars have played only 18 games together this year, Hanschu said, five of which were played at state.

Their only loss during the state tournament was against Liberal in the fourth round.

During state play, the team won 12-2 in the first round, 5-3 in the second, 4-2 in the third, lost 5-9 in the fourth, and won 13-3 in the final round.

“Our team is amazing,” Honschu said. “We went from strangers and opponents to friends and teammates.”

Hanschu said CVL All-stars won the sportsmanship award during the state tournament.

“It was odd because they usually give the sportsmanship award to teams that don’t win the tournament,” he said. “It’s not just a team award. They look at how the team’s parents and fans conduct themselves, too.”

Hanschu’s team also picked up a sportsmanship award at the district level.

“We annihilated Lyons 27-4 and 20-0 and still managed to get the sportsmanship award,” Hanschu said.

The all-stars are headed to Chadron, Nebraska Thursday where they will play in the Midwest Regional Baseball Tournament.
