Staff writer

Marion’s cross country boys team took fourth place and Goessel second at Regional meets Saturday.

The Warriors boys team missed qualifying for Class 2A state as a team, but Goessel will be one of 12 in Class 1A competition at Victoria Sand Plum Nature Trail in Victoria this weekend.

Marion

Marion’s cross country boys team took fourth at Regionals Saturday at Prairie Hills in Buhler.

“We had a beautiful day for a meet on Saturday and our athletes ran like champions,” coach Grant Thierolf said. “Our boys were one place and eight points away from qualifying as a team. So close!”

Heidi Grimmett finished fourth at 21 minutes, 52 seconds.

“She ran so much better than she did at league last week and she should be ready to go for state,” Thierolf said.

Gavin Wasmuth, Luke Wessel, and Tristen Dye qualified for state for the boys team.

“Wessel is writing a nice ending to his freshman year by qualifying for the state meet with a very solid time,” Thierolf said. “He ran like gangbusters in the last mile to move into 11th place.”

Goessel

Goessel boys cross country finished fifth at its Regional meet Saturday in Wichita.

The girls team also finished fifth, but missed a state berth by three points.

Jacob Schrag, Ben Olson, Javin Schmidt, Josiah Lapp, and Timothy Schrag will represent the Bluebirds at state this upcoming Saturday.

Ben Olson led the Bluebirds at Regionals with a fifth-place finish. Cheyenne Sawyer led the Bluebird girls team finishing 17th.

Hillsboro

Hillsboro girls cross country placed fifth at Regionals.

Trojan Emersyn Funk was in second place Saturday in Buhler with 21 minutes, 27 seconds.

She was the sole member of Hillsboro cross country to qualify for state.
