From every direction in the county, we hear that the damage to the oats by rust was not nearly so bad as was at first supposed. We have heard of one farmer who was advised to burn his oats in the field, but who has threshed an average of forty bushels per acre from that identical field.

The Elgin hotel is doing a land office business in the commercial traveler trade.

There is talk of sending John L. Sullivan to Congress. It is the only hope the Democrats now have of knocking out the Republican majority.

Mr. Josiah Chorn, of Lincolnville, has cut fifty acres of timothy on his farm this season which made two tons of hay to the acre. It is a new meadow sown last fall. Yet some people think you can’t raise timothy in Kansas! Now let them acknowledge the Chorn!

Last Sunday was one of the most oppressive days we have ever experienced in Kansas. Not a leaf rustled, and the heat was intense. But it has been delightful since.

A young ladies lawn tennis club has been organized in Marion. One condition of membership in the club is a pledge never to marry, but as nearly all the members are already pledged the other way, this doesn’t fool anybody.

The Cottonwood and Luta have been on another high this week.
