13-year-olds going to state

The Cottonwood Valley League All-Stars advanced to state tournament for 13-and-younger Babe Ruth baseball by winning their district tournament last weekend in Marion.

The All-Stars are mostly Marion players, with one each from Peabody, Tampa, and Cottonwood Falls.

The team lost its first game to Mid-Kansas Americans, 9-8, then they defeated Ellsworth, Newton, and Mid-Kansas Nationals.

The finals were a rematch against the Americans, and the All-Stars had to win two games without losing.

The All-Stars were behind 8-7, one out away from losing the first game, when they scored four runs to win 11-8 and force a second game.

In the second championship game, the All-Stars fell behind 9-0 in the middle of the second inning. They then scored 14 runs to take the lead.

The game was tied 15-15 in the bottom of the sixth inning with the All-Stars batting. They scored two runs and held the Americans scoreless in the seventh inning to win 17-15.

In the state tournament, the All-Stars will play against Stevens County at noon Friday in Ottawa.
