1 crash becomes 2, then 3 near Goessel

Staff writer

It wasn’t the luckiest day of Shelby J. Wiens’s life. Her car was hit not once, not twice, but three times in a chain-reaction accident.

First, the 21-year-old Moundridge woman was driving her 2015 Subaru Forester south on K-15 when a 2004 Ford Taurus driven by Ashley M. Hagen, 32, Goessel, turned in front of Wiens’s car at 10:24 p.m. Jan. 22. The cars collided in the intersection of K-15 and 120th Rd.

Both were injured, as were Trevin J. Wiens, 22, a passenger in the Subaru, and Elizabeth Miller, 7, Goessel, a passenger in the Ford. All declined to be taken to a hospital by ambulance.

As if that weren’t enough, a 2021 Ford Bronco driven northbound on K-15 by Samuel L. Shahan, 39, Marion, hit Wiens’s Subaru, which was disabled in the intersection.

The Ford then hit a 2017 Chevrolet Cruze driven by driven by Caitlyn Carter, 20, Wichita. Carter had seen Wiens’s disabled car and pulled to the side of the highway.

Carter, who was trying to stay safe, was taken by ambulance to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.

To make matters worse, a 2010 Chevrolet Malibu driven northbound on K-15 by Preston L. Minson, 17, Galva, hit Wiens’s Subaru again.

Hagen was ticketed for failure to yield. No other citations were issued.

All cars were towed from the scene.
