Plans are being made for a one-day centennial celebration at Pilsen Oct. 9 to commemorate the community’s 100th birthday. Currently, Pilsen is a community of around 90 residents. It is located nine miles north of Marion.

Junior Bredemeier, Marion’s city superintendent, will retire Tuesday after almost 42 years of service. “They’re flying flags all over the county to honor me,” he said with a grin. Tuesday is Flag Day.

Janet Ehrlich, daughter of J.C. and Florence Ehrlich of Marion, has been teaching children of U.S. military personnel at Simbach AFB, Germany, and writes of her visit to the Soviet Union with a group of teachers.

Florence Middle School held its eighth grade graduation and awards assembly May 24 in the school gym. Lori Tice was named valedictorian. Alan Meisinger was salutatorian.

T/Sgt. Terri Lehman, daughter of Kenneth and Shirley Robinson of Florence, recently was presented a citation and award as “The Outstanding USAF Military Personnel Technician of the Year.”

Thurston Thies, John Wheeler, Bill Griffith, and William Teufel have qualified for the state Junior Olympics meet Saturday in Junction City.
