Gov. Mike Hayden sent a team of experts to Marion to listen to the story of a community that had been down—but not counted out—and to help local leaders continue the rebound toward economic prosperity. John Crofoot acted as spokesman for the community.

Harvest 1988 is well underway with elevator operators and farmers reporting that this year’s wheat crop in Marion County is only an average one.

Births announced in this week’s issue include Michael Robert, son of J. Robert and Anita Brookens of Marion, born June 13; Jason Lee, son of Gary and Joella Hett of Marion, born June 16; and Jennifer Marie, daughter of Jay and Michelle Sandwell of Oklahoma City, also born June 16.

The newly expanded and improved press box at Marion Stadium is almost complete. The structure is larger than the one it replaces and is fully insulated, with aluminum siding. Windows are all new and can be raised or lowered for filming a game.

The future of the old Santa Fe depot was discussed Monday by the city commission. The lease has expired on the building and there seems to be little activity at “The Depot” youth center, so commissioners are debating what the building could be used for in the future.
