A gigantic Caterpillar-powered chipping and grinding machine removed the old asphalt surface from Main Street this past week, right down to the original bricks. The ground-up surface was elevated by a conveyor into trucks and hauled away. Eventually it will be used to surface city alleys. Starting Wednesday a new asphalt pavement will be applied to the surface of Main Street from the east city limits to Luta Creek … just in time for Old Settlers’ Day.

Aspen Chapel of the Prince of Peace in Aspen, Colo., was the setting Aug. 6 for the wedding of Nicki Newman and Alex H. Case.

Former students at Morning Star School and community residents gathered Sunday noon at the IOOF-Rebekah hall for a carry-in dinner and an afternoon of visiting.

Mr. and Mrs. Ty Zeiner have invited the public to an open house Sunday afternoon at Thompson-Harp-Zeiner Funeral Home, 205 Elm, in recognition of the long history of that business in the Marion community. Earliest records available, belonging to Mercil (Thompson) Wight of Marion, show that the first services of the present business were 100 years ago.

Lisa Peterson and John Stika were named 1988 Homecoming Queen and King at Centre High School’s home game Friday.
