Three former Marion residents who returned for Memorial Day festivities are pictured on the front page as they visit over coffee furnished by the Marion Kiwanis Club. The trio includes Billie Schwemmer of Wichita, Ed Fox of Topeka, and John Riddle of Lee’s Summit, Mo.

After 21 years as board of education clerk for Marion Unified School District, Earlene Hague will retire in July. She was appointed school board clerk in July of 1968, after working a couple of years as a secretary in the Marion County Highway Department.

Former Marion merchant Albert “Al” Bernhardt, 74, died Sunday, May 28, at Marion Manor.

Jeff Williams was selected by the Marion High School faculty as Student of the Month for May. Jeff is the son of Dean and Wanda Williams of rural Marion.

In an emotional ceremony Thursday, the Prisoner of War Medal was awarded posthumously to Chaplain Emil Kapaun. Father Kapaun’s medals, as well as other artifacts, are on display in the Kapaun Mount Carmel High School lobby.

Marion High School sent nine athletes to the state track and field meet at Wichita State University. They were William Teufel, Lane Allison, Glenn Krispense, Kelly Linnens, Melanie Kraus, Kristy Herbel, Robin Summervill, Iris Shanklin, and Reyes Martinez.
