Temperatures that fell to 24 degrees below zero two days this past week did cause problems. Merle Bruner, working foreman for the city of Marion, reported several water meters froze. A water pipe burst in the top floor science lab at Marion High School and was not discovered until after Christmas Day. It flooded rooms up and down the east side of the building causing damage estimated anywhere between $500-$2,000. Auto shops also were busy, as many vehicles would not start after a night in the cold weather.

Lucille Britain of Marion has won national recognition for excellence in needlecraft design with her “Victorian Wreath” published in Annie’s Pattern Club Newsletter #60.

For Eloise Mueller, 1990 Marion Chamber of Commerce president, the new decade means a time for new ideas. “I’ll be asking for ideas and suggestions. We need to get new people in the community involved, so our ideas don’t get stale,” she said Thursday.

The E and M Café, a landmark in Durham for 22 years, will close its doors Monday. Owner Earl Frick said he and his wife, Margaret, will “retire and take it easy.”
