About 500 people attended the organizational meeting of Preserve the Heartland, a group of Marion, Morris, and Chase county residents aimed at fighting any expansion of Fort Riley. The meeting was held at Centre High School.

City of Marion worker Bob Matz is pictured riding on the former Tony and Tillie Schafers house as it moved down the hill on Main Street. Now that the valley portion of town is protected from flood, this was the first house to reverse the trend. It was purchased and relocated to North First Street by Ron and Judi Stewart.

Mr. and Mrs. Robert Schmidt were surprised Friday night to see their two older sons, Rodney of Greensboro, North Carolina, and Troy of Marion, on the Johnny Carson “Tonight” show. The Schmidt brothers were vacationing in California.

The Marion girls won the Little River Quadrangular with a score of 101 and Melanie Kraus set a school record with a high jump of 5 feet, 2¼ inches.

Pictured Marion Elementary School third graders Holly Eddy, Sarah Crofoot, Tyler Jantz, Joshua Montgomery, Renee Reiswig, and Lisa Buchholz and their classmates planted two pear trees at the southwest corner of the school building on Friday in honor of Earth Day.

Bertha Bitner Ratzlaff, one of the state’s oldest residents, celebrated her 106th birthday April 18 at Marion Manor.
