No opposition was heard at first public hearing Monday for the Marion County Courthouse elevator grant request. If approved, the grant would fund wheelchair ramps, accessible restrooms, and water fountains, extensive electrical upgrading, and an elevator from the basement to the attic.

D.J. Ehlers is pictured on the front page as he measures door framing on the child’s playhouse under construction by Marion High School FFA members. The playhouse will be offered for use as a fund-raiser by the Marion County branch of the American Cancer Society.

Mrs. Jay (Becky) Woerz of Emporia has been named Kansas Child Care Provider of the Year by the Child Care Providers Coalition of Kansas. Woerz has owned and operated Tender Years home day-care for the past 20 years. She is the daughter of Vera Lentz and daughter-in-law of Harold and Norma Jean Woerz of Marion.

Marion High School senior Angie Bina has signed a letter of intent with Fort Hays State University to play basketball. Bina won state championship medals in both cross-country and volleyball on the same day this past year, earning her mention in Sports Illustrated.

Register of Deeds Dorothy Lawrence is pictured holding the first record book for Marion County, started in 1865. Lawrence, who retires Friday, estimates she has recorded 37,000 deeds and mortgages and 30,000 other records since she began working in the office in 1975.
