Marion Duckwall’s manager Janie Meierhoff presented checks for $260 each to Elora Robinson and Bob Brookens, representing Marion Boy and Girl Scouts. The money came from a “cutest baby” contest held at the store. Winning baby was 12-week-old Janessa Tammen, granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Maddox of Elmdale.

Jim Lehrer’s newest fiction novel, “A Bus of My Own,” is now available at Marion City Library. Lehrer lived in Marion in the mid-1940s while his parents operated an area bus line.

Marion Police Department this week commended Kevin Weigart, 8, Daniel Bryant, 12, and Matt Bryant, 10, for their lifesaving attempt when they found 72-year-old Glenn Matthews who collapsed Nov. 8 while walking his dog near the corner of South First and Burbridge in Marion.

Mary Yates of Durham was one of the lucky grand prize winners in the Heinz Homestyle Gravy “Cooking in Style” contest. Boxes arrived at the Yates home filled with a “complete Cuisinart kitchen,” and Henry Haller, retired White House executive chef, spent Friday at the Yates home preparing a “White House Dinner.”

Jim Hoy, professor of English at Emporia State University, will speak at the annual Marion Chamber of Commerce farmer appreciation dinner at 6 p.m. Monday. The steak dinner is held in appreciation of all the business area farmers and ranchers do in Marion.
