Korean War hero Chaplain Emil Kapaun was honored April 21 with an outdoor Mass at Kapaun-Mt. Carmel High School, Wichita, followed by a banquet that evening. The celebration was in honor of the 50th anniversary of Kapaun’s entry into military service.

Thurston Thies has been voted Student of the Month by the Marion High School faculty. The senior is the son of Wayne and Sandra Thies of Marion. He plans to attend Kansas State University and major in finance.

Sunday was a perfect day for motocross races, and Ron Hardey’s Green Acres Raceway on Walnut Street brought hundreds of people to Marion for that purpose. The event was the Kansas Spring championships in motocross racing with a $2,300 purse incentive.

Work has finally started on the new grocery store in Marion. Grosse Construction Co. is removing the old concrete prior to a new slab being poured at the former Marion Motor Center lot.

Marion High School graduate Brenda Bina, now running track for Emporia State University, won the conference championship in high jump Saturday. Her jump of 5-5.5 made her the only ESU competitor to win an event. The team finished fourth in the conference.

Four restaurants in Marion County have been included on a national list of the 25 best eateries in the United States. They are Kingfisher’s Inn at Marion, Bluestem Café at Burns, Iron Kettle at Hillsboro, and BarnStormers at Goessel.
