Due to stricter interpretations of the federal Constitution, it has been decided not to have school-sponsored religious services this year. Baccalaureate will be a separate service from graduation ceremonies. The religious service will be at 7 p.m. Saturday, in Marion Gymnasium. It will be sponsored by Marion Ministerial Alliance, in cooperation with volunteer members of the graduating class.

Donald Blakeslee, associate professor of anthropology at WSU, will speak on “Roots of the Santa Fe Trail” Friday at the Marion Chamber of Commerce meeting.

Torey Hett of Marion participated Saturday and Sunday in Wichita in Challenge ’93, a track and field event for physically challenged athletes. He has six gold medals to prove it.

Christine Laue has joined the staff of the Omaha World-Herald as a journalism intern this summer. A graduate of Marion High School and a senior at the University of Kansas, she is the daughter of Harvey and Betty Sanders of Marion.

Marion native Gary Melcher has been named head basketball coach for the coming year at El Dorado High School.

The annual Biking Across Kansas ride will pass through Marion again this year. About 1,000 riders are expected to participate in the June 5-12 ride. Peggy Blackman and the Marion Chamber of Commerce are making plans for their overnight stay, which will include a spaghetti dinner for cyclists.
