City crews are pictured removing overhanging signs from the downtown business district. City officials encourage businesses to use flat signs only across the business front instead of signs overhanging the sidewalk. They say overhanging signs detract from architectural details and produce visual clutter while the flat signs are more attractive and do a better job of advertising.

Retired teacher Alvina Hoffman and her husband Earl are featured this week in reporter/photographer Amy Smith’s weekly article “They made a difference.”

Eileen Hett is Student of the Month at Marion High School. The senior is the daughter of Clifford and Evelyn Hett of rural Peabody. Eileen plans to pursue a business degree at Emporia State University.

Scot Williams won first place in the Pinewood Derby held Sunday afternoon at Eastmoor United Methodist Church. Chad Palic took second and Andy Holt third. The award for “judges’ favorite design” went to Matt Rhodes.

Winners of the Marion Elementary School spelling bee were Dustin Sherbert and Camille Wessel. They will represent the school Feb. 9 at the Marion County Spelling Bee.
