Marion has been selected as the primary research site for a major scientific study in newspaper readership, the result of which will be presented at a prestigious national convention in October.

Marquette University researchers who are conducting the study hope that at least 200 people will participate in the project.

According to owner Connie Parscal, Cottonwood Valley Tan and Tone will open its doors Aug. 15 at 330 E. Main, Marion.

Jason Wheeler is pictured as he visits with a patient in Shriners Hospital in St. Louis.

A recent graduate of Marion High School, Jason is one of the west team players in the annual Shrine Bowl football classic to be played Saturday at Washburn University in Topeka.

Cy and L.Dena Goertz will soon have part of themselves in Cedar Crest mansion, Topeka. Media stories about needed repairs at the residence mentioned a chair with a hole in the cane back.

L.Dena wrote Gov. Bill Graves, offering to repair the chair. Her suggestion was accepted and a new, comfortable cane back is being installed.

Marion Elementary Gym is open from 8 to 10 p.m. weeknights from now until Aug. 9. High school students and adults may come play basketball or volley ball.

There were 82 children participating in the Kansas Kids Read program at Marion City Library this summer.

Jessica Bernhardt read the most books, 225, and Sara Davidson read the most pages, 6,396.

Winners drawing books were Taylor Carrithers, Alex Nuss, Rachel Davidson, Molly Rhodes, Josh Yerion, Joanna McGinness, and Grant Garrard.
