Prospects for one of the best crop years in history of Marion County were dashed by hail and strong winds early Friday morning.

Junior Bredemeier, city superintendent, was named Marion’s fire chief Monday. Bredemeier will fill the vacancy created by the untimely death of Hazel Meierhoff. Named as assistant chiefs were Bill Burkholder and Mike Regnier.

Farmers Market will begin Saturday on Marion’s Main Street and continue each Saturday in July and August. Anyone with homegrown produce may display it for sale by simply registering first at the Chamber of Commerce office downtown.

Russell Hett of the Aulne community entered plump, juicy apricots in the Marion County Record produce derby this week. The largest measured seven inches in circumference.

Ed Navrat is the subject of this week’s “Personality Profile” by Ruth Meyer.

Marion’s VFW Auxiliary and St. Luke Hospital were notified this week that each would receive sums of $9,009.32 from settlement of the estate of Evelyn E. Lutt, former Marion resident who died in March 1975.

Teresa Costello and Denise Magathan, two young post-high school students, are working for Kan-Go Oil Co. this summer. However, they are not sitting in air-conditioned offices doing office work. They are working outdoors, in the sun and wind, for nine and sometimes 10 hours a day.
