More than 8,000 persons basked in the balmy, 75-degree warmth of the sun and enjoyed the sights, sounds and smells of the 67th annual Old Settlers’ Day parade in Marion last Saturday.

Marion Chamber of Commerce ambassadors Gerry Harris and Joyce Smith are pictured as they present “first dollar of clear profit” certificates to attorney Bob Brookens and Wanda Richmond.

The superintendent of postal operations at Marion is Tommy Thompson who is featured in this week’s “Personality Profile.” Tommy became a sub carrier in 1956, a carrier in 1964, assistant to the postmaster in 1964, then to his current position in 1975.

“Happy Birthday” to the ‘Old Thing’ took precedence over work one afternoon this week. All but two members were present to mark the beginning of another volume in the long life of your favorite newspaper. Dan Glickman met with city officials, Street Commissioner Lester Henderson, Finance Commissioner Larry D. Loomis, Mayor Peggy Blackman, and City Attorney D.W. Wheeler on Saturday in regard to sewer problems. He pledged to send an EPA representative to Marion in an attempt to see if there are alternatives to the engineering estimate that a 1.6 million dollar plant be located uphill east of town.
