Marion city commissioners voted Monday evening to pay $1,425 toward the painting and construction of eight new informational and directional signs along US-50 and 56. The balance of the cost will be shared by the Marion Chamber of Commerce and the PRIDE committee.

Time and space-saving technology are reducing a century-old problem in the district court office at Marion County Courthouse. The problem is tons of court records; the solution is a palm-sized 16mm film cassette and an electronic reader-printer.

Stone Prairie, near Marion, is the only registered youth hostel in Kansas. Owned and operated by Nancy Hart, it is located three miles west and 2.5 south of Marion’s city limits.

Marion Chamber of Commerce ambassadors George Jackson and Donna Fruechting presented “first dollar of clear profit” certificates to four new businesses this week: Main Street Auto Service, Dine Inn Café, Irv Schroeder Motors and Midwest Sales and Service.

Ernest Meierhoff grew an 8½- pound banana cantaloupe in his home garden at 201 Grant. Meierhoff is the most recent entrant in the annual Marion County Record produce derby.

Marion Kiwanis Club has pledged a $2,000 contribution to the fund for establishing shelter house and playground equipment at East Park.
