Old Settlers’ Day this year is not only another in the long series of homecomings, it’s also the dedication day of Marion’s flood protection project which has been 20 years in the making.

Football Homecoming Queen candidates are Julie Hett, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Hett, Carla Jost, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Steve Jost, and Theresa Kroupa, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edmund Kroupa. One of the girls will be crowned during halftime ceremonies Friday when Marion hosts CVL opponent Herington.

Special feature writer Ruth Meyer’s “Personality Profile” for this week features Gordon Wolf and tells the history of Wolf’s Creamery founded in the late 1800s.

One of Ern Hett’s wheat sculptures was shown in the October issue of “Decorating and Crafts Ideas” magazine.

Mr. and Mrs. Ronald J. Cork have purchased an early day home, the former residence of the Brown Corby family at 328 N. Lincoln. The late Mr. Corby was a banker at Marion National and his daughter was a school teacher at Marion for many years. Bown-Corby School was named in her honor. Cork is administrator at St. Luke Hospital.

Glen “Shorty” Conyers is pictured leaning on his mail truck for the last time. Conyers retired Friday after 30 years of service as letter carrier in Marion.
