Residences and business properties in the valley portion of Marion will be getting new water mains, and Uncle Sam will foot the bill.

Produce Derby entry this week comes from John and Jim Jirak, son of Mr. and Mrs. Francis Jirak of rural Tampa. Their “Crimson Sweet” watermelons weighed 46 and 47 pounds — normal weight is around 30 pounds. The melons were grown by the boys’ uncles, the Jirak Brothers, four sons of Mr. and Mrs. Leo Jirak.

Douglas Westerhaus of Marion has been admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of the United States. He received the notification recently. A graduate of Marion High School, the University of Kansas and the KU Law School, Westerhaus is associated with his father, Edwin G. Westerhaus, in the practice of law in Marion.

The children of Ralph and Wanda Richmond entertained with a potluck dinner and dance Saturday evening at Nelson’s Hall near Antelope in honor of the parents’ 25th wedding anniversary.

Cub Scouts of Den 1, who recently visited the Marion County Record office, published their own newspaper this week. Called the “Cub News,” articles were written by Charles Smithhart, Greg Warnica, Bill Davis, Revelo Harris, and Chris Loveless.
