There was a distinguished visitor this weekend at Marion County Lake — Governor Carlin and his family, accompanied by a highway patrolman. They had attended the Fourth of July festivities in Wichita and Jane Gilchrist, who works in the statehouse, had offered them the use of her cabin for the weekend. They spent most of Sunday at the lake, quite a bit of the time at the beach.
This week’s Produce Derby includes an entry by Mrs. Max Loveless, who is pictured holding a three-pound zucchini squash from her garden at Antelope. She reports a bumper crop of red onions, beans, beets, potatoes, zucchini, broccoli, and brussels sprouts.
Robert Craft, Clay Center, has been named to the Marion County district of the Kansas Highway Patrol. Craft replaces Sgt. John Stultz, who has been transferred to KHP Division IV headquarters in Chanute.
Carol Laue, Kristi Enos, Allison Ogden, and April Ogden attended Girl Scout camp at Camp Daisy Hindman, Dover, from June 21 to July 3. They enjoyed canoeing, swimming, horseback riding and leather craft while attending camp.
