One-time resident of Marion Jim Lehrer and his anchorman Robert MacNeil received the 1982 William Allen White Foundation award for Journalistic Merit. Small town memories were not lost on Lehrer. “My favorite newspaper is in fact the ‘Marion County Record,’” he told the luncheon audience, mostly journalists. “Eat your heart out, Washington Post.”

Michael Classen of Marion has accepted a position with Walmart of Lamar, Missouri. The son of Mr. and Mr. Matthew Classen of Marion, he previously has been employed at Marion National Bank and at the National Bank of Wichita.

Kris Kelsey, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Kelsey, is pictured as she reigned over the Marion Warriors defeat of the Centre Cougars during the homecoming game Friday. Also in the picture are her attendants Loreen Wiens and Melissa Robinson and crown bearers, Kay Lynn Summervill and Brian Cox.

Births announced tis week include Andrea Dawn, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tony Luna of Lost Springs; Ellen Marie, daughter of Dennis and Mary Pankratz of Modesto, California; and Justin Paul, son of Paul and Elaine Morse of Salina.

Jami Shirley shot 64 percent from the field and 11 of 12 from the line for 39 points Monday night to lead Marion’s Lady Warriors past Centre 48 to 32.
