Enrollment in Marion and Florence schools has apparently declined for the second consecutive year. Last year, 678 students had enrolled by the first day of school. This year, 666 had enrolled.

Marion Ambulance Service Captain Gene Winkler is pictured on the front page as he “communicates” with one of fifteen new radios received recently by the county ambulance service. Ambulance Director Max Gough says the radios will improve service by reducing response times to emergency calls “for the foreseeable future.”

A patented rubber-asphalt mix is being installed on eight miles of US-77 between Marion and Florence. According to the project superintendent, all the recycled rubber for the project is from car tires discarded in the Midwest region of the United States.

Mr. and Mrs. Jonah Seifert, subjects of this week’s “Personality Profile,” are pictured reading an 1854 Bible passed down from Mrs. Seifert’s great-grandmother. The Bible contains the original translation of Martin Luther, according to Mrs. Seifert.

“Big Bird” is inviting Marion youth to fly, hop, walk, or drive to “The Little House” on Saturday to register for the puppet and marionette workshop. Twins Ann and Jan Bryant, Marion High School juniors, and Margaret May will conduct the workshop.
