The Bluegrass Jayhawker Band, made up of three members of the Nelson Funk family of Hillsboro and two other musicians from Newton, will present a variety of authentic Bluegrass music during the afternoon program on Old Settlers’ Day.

The four-year ritual of hauling Marion County prisoners to and from the Harvey County Jail in Newton will end next year. Marion County commissioners voted Monday to accept a low bid for renovation to the obsolete county jail in Marion.

The Marion County Record was notified this week that the newspaper has been awarded second place in general excellence, nationally, by the Newspaper Editorial Workshop Services (NEWS). First place went to the Mobridge (S.D.) Tribune for the second consecutive year.

Ambulances at Florence will soon have a new home, according to Bob Seward, director of the service. The new facility, located at 415 N. Main, will be completed by Grimmett Construction Co. in about a week.

Produce Derby entry this week is peaches grown by Mable Matz. Mable watered the peach tree, which is a volunteer, some and it produced five dozen choice fruit.

Denice Bina entered two decorated cakes in competition at the Kansas State Fair. Her wedding cake placed third and her cake in the “man’s hobby division,” which was cleverly decorated to look like a can of Copenhagen snuff, placed second.
