January 3, 1963

Lanell Marie, 13th child of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Tajchman is the “First Baby of 1963” in Marion. She was born Jan. 2 at St. Luke Hospital. She and her parents will be the recipients of the fine first baby gifts offered each year by Marion merchants.

The first residence fire in Marion in many months occurred Wednesday at the Carl Anderson residence on Cleveland Street in Jex Addition. The Andersons and their four small children lost much of the clothing and belongings.

James Moffitt of Tampa will be among two contingents of volunteers departing Jan. 3 for Nigeria to work as secondary school teachers. After a week’s orientation in Lagos and regional capitals, the volunteers will be assigned to secondary schools throughout Nigeria, using English as the language of instruction.

Marion High School’s “Basketball Queen” will be crowned during halftime of the Warrior-Council Grove game next week. Finalists for queen are Cheryl Caselman, senior, and two juniors Donna Hanschu and Mary Konarik. The girls will be escorted by Mike Schwemmer, Lowell Ensey, and Max Jackson.

Kathy Klein entertained college and high school friends, Connie Sturgis of Manhattan, Ann Falen and Linda Gutsch of Emporia, Linda Strome of Burdick and Sandra Janzen of Lincolnville at a “pajama party” Thursday evening.
