Featured speaker at the Old Settlers’ Day program in the park Friday will be a prominent former Marionite, Dr. James Albert “Bert” Wheeler of Newton. With this OSD begins the honoring of Marion High School graduating classes. This year’s honored classes will by those of 1953, 1943, 1933, 1923, 1913, and 1903.

An Armadillo, a real stranger to this part of the country, was taken alive early Tuesday morning by Clifford “Tip” McFadden, Marion farmer. It is creating a lot of interest. The encyclopedia says the armadillo is a native of Central and South America and rarely gets farther north than Texas and Louisiana.

“Constant Marion,” a junior yearling Poland China Boar, won Grand Champion honors last week at the Kansas State Fair. The 700-pound champion was entered and shown by Joseph W. Dvorak of Marion.

Selected numbers of the top-notch home talent “Mother Goose” program, staged for the annual Community Guild banquet last Tuesday, will be repeated Friday on the Old Settler’s program platform in Central Park.

Wheat sowing has begun and condition of the soil is good for growth. Farmers will be at top speed to get the crop in on time. Moisture content is more in some parts where sowing will be delayed a bit. —Helen Navrat, Pilsen correspondent.
