One of 1963’s accomplishments, another symbol of steady progress being made in Marion, is the fine new waterworks plant fast taking shape on North Walnut Street.

Shirley Hamm, fourth grade student and the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clayton Hamm of Marion, was the lucky winner of the 4-year-old pony, Smokey, at the big drawing last Friday night. Other winners were Brook Beaston, chemistry set; Donna Anderson, doll; Frankie Tajchman, pool table; and Darlene Pecinovsky, Magnatel game.

Winners in the Chamber of Commerce Christmas lighting contest were announced this week. First place in the home decorations went to Charles Bredemeier Jr. Second was Glenn Kline and Edward Good received third. Honorable mention went to Ira Newcomer and Wilbur Razor.

Engagements announced this week included those of Marlys Ann Stika to Robert R. Kretchmar; Lucinda Hauser to Duane Reed; Johnsie Just to A 1/c Gerald L. Buller; and Sharon Ann Craft to Richard Gene Herbel. Also reported was the wedding of Glenda Harlan and Laurence Webster.

Christmas this year will be an unusually happy one at the home of Mrs. Essie V. Johnson of Strong City. She was the winner of a new station wagon in a nationwide contest sponsored recently by the B.F. Goodrich Tire and Rubber Company. The ticket which Mrs. Johnson posted to win the vehicle was made out at Bud’s Conoco Service in Marion. The car was delivered to her in ceremonies at Kansas City.

Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Powell have purchased the suburban home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hollar, just east of Marion.
