Five Marion High School juniors have been selected to attend the annual Sunflower Girls’ State and Boys’ State gatherings at Lawrence this year. They are Carol Caselman, Melody Thompson, Don Westerhaus, Gene Schimpf, and Gilbert Johnson.

Wayne Schroeder of Hillsboro has purchased the Klassen Barber Shop in Marion and took over operation of the business on Tuesday. Former owner, Verlan Klassen, was forced to sell due to a skin allergy on his hands.

Pictured is Nancy Klenda, daughter of Alfonso Klenda, crowned 1964 “Cougar Sweetheart” basketball queen during a Centre game in February. Her attendants were Mary Agnes Bina, Gloria Lewerenz, Kris Schubert and Mary Ann Svitak.

The operetta “Rumpelstiltskin” will be presented Friday night at the city auditorium. Rumpelstiltskin will be played by Chuck McElwain and Gretchen by Anita Hett. Other sixth graders who help tell the fairy tale are Wayne Mott, Gwen Broz, Dean Ensey, Stanley Hett, Janel Klose, Rita Stika, Patsy Wood, Becky Lentz, Debbie Schrader, Roger Bennett, David Gooding Terry Plenert, and Vince Tharp. All of the fifth graders will serve as the chorus. Musical direction is by Miss Nadean Kruse.

Charles Campbell and Roy Keller will be the focal point of an informal get-acquainted coffee to be held March 21 in the multi-purpose room of Marion Elementary School.
