David W. Wheeler, prominent Marion attorney, has been endorsed by the Central Kansas Bar Association, as a candidate for the position as chairman of the Supreme Court Nominating Commission. Voting will be down by mail during the early part of May.

Steelworker Third Class Thomas E. Carr, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Max E. Carr of Marion, returned April 9 with the main body of Navy Mobile Construction Battalion Five (Seabees) to Port Hueneme, Calif., after an eight-month deployment on Okinawa.

Karen Kline, a recent graduate of Vernon’s School of Cosmetology, Wichita, will be taking appointments at R-K Beauty Shop in Marion. Other operators on the staff of the shop are Sharon Alexander, Joyce Colgin, and owner Rachel Keazer.

Henry Jirak and son Sylvin have constructed handrails for the front steps of the Pilsen church and have installed them. Mr. Krotz will finish them with paint. It has been difficult for the elderly to safely descend the many steps.

The Marion track team, coached by Rex Wilson, has looked good recently. Gene Schimpf took first in the shot put April 20 at Herington, with a toss of 50’8½”. Schimpf also broke a meet record at Buhler April 23 with a shot put throw of 52’ 3 3/8”.
