Heavy rains around Durham Friday and Saturday amounted to eight inches, flooding the rich farmland near the town, all business places and some homes. Water was a few inches deep in the Durham State Bank, but about 14 inches deep in the Vogel Café.

Jim Weinman of Augusta has been hired to be high school principal at Marion for the coming year.

Wesley Summervill went through a frightening and painful experience Monday morning when a usually mild- tempered boar rushed him, got him down and cut a nasty wound with his tusk in his leg just above the knee. At least 20 stitches were required to close the wound.

The big Fourth of July celebration at Peabody this year will be held on Monday, July 5, due to the fact that Independence Day falls on Sunday.

Marion women have again organized a softball team and will play their first game at Florence Friday night. Team members are Mary Ann Finke, Florence Fender, Donna Shirley, Harriet Bina, Jane Ann Bina, Shirley Bredemeier, Norma Kline, Rosalie Carr, Margaret Ehrlich, Fern Frans, Frances Hunt, Mary Westerhaus, and Marge Schwartz.

Michael Brodhead, Marion, has been appointed curator of the Kansas Collection, part of the Department of Special Collections at Watson Library on the campus of the University of Kansas, Lawrence.
