The season of flying saucers, a time of year formerly called “Dog Days,” is upon us. And, Marion is not to be left in the shade. A genuine flying saucer was sighted here last week. An unidentified flying object, that’s the official name, was sighted by Norma Hannaford and Mrs. Gordon Wolf one evening last week at Marion Country Club.

Land was cleared and construction was started this week on the new office building here for the Marion County Farm Bureau. It is located at the corner of East Main and Coble streets, just east of the IGA store.

Three brothers, Ralph, Jim, and Jack Richmond have purchased Marion Lumber Company. They will take over operation on August 1. The lumber company is presently owned by Harold Woerz. Previously it was operated by the late Jacob Barrett.

Sandra Janzen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Janzen of Lincolnville, was named first runner-up in the Kansas Beauty Pageant, held in Wichita last week.

Even the turtles thought the concrete was pretty hot and needed a good deal of prodding to put on a speedy race last week at Kid’s Day in the park. Pictured with the turtles at the starting line are Russell Bowers, Melody Meier, Wanda Hett, Lance Alexander, Roger Hannaford, and Glen Hett.

The women’s softball team remains unbeaten this summer and racked up their third win Friday over Towanda. Norma Kline went all the way on the mound, with Janet Meisinger behind the catcher’s mask.
