The gigantic tainter gates at Marion Dam, that will control water in the Marion Reservoir, are now installed and closed. It is hoped they can close the dam completely and start impounding water on purpose some time toward the end of January. There still are a few bridges, some tree clearing, and a little oil well equipment to be moved before impounding starts.

The Marion Warriors, league-leading champions of the Cottonwood Valley, placed six players on the mythical Cottonwood Valley League all-star 24-man squad. Selected from Marion were Dennis Knoblock, senior, and Kerry Domke, junior, backs; Lester Harlan, Charles Pankratz, Jay Woerz, senior, and Steve May, junior, linemen.

The death of Dr. Charles R. Magee early Tuesday morning came as a great shock to the entire community, and the loss to the area will be one that can never be filled. Memorial funds have been established in his name at the Marion Methodist Church, for the memorial fountain in the park, and at St. Luke Hospital to purchase an electronic coronary care unit for the use of the community.

Anita Schlehuber, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Schlehuber of Marion, reached the semi-finals competition with 52 others in the southwest regional singing auditions at Austin, Texas, recently. She is a senior at Kansas State Teachers College, Emporia.
