Dwight “Ike” Eisenhower and Mrs. Eisenhower were welcomed home Wednesday by a cheering throng of friends and well-wishers in Abilene. The crowd attending was estimated at everywhere from 30,000 or 50,000.
Carl Elling has purchased the interest of Ezra Bernhardt in the local Bernhardt and Utting Pontiac-John Deere agency. The business will now be known as Elling and Utting.
T.C. Ensey was first place winner in the first flight of the second Marion Country Club golf tourney of the season with a score of 73. Bob Brooks was second with 74. Jim Kline, Bob Hoover, and Vernon Regier were in a three-way tie with 83 each in the second flight. In first place in the third flight was Max Jackson with 92.
A driving hailstorm, accompanied by rain and high winds cut a swath about two or three miles wide in the Youngtown neighborhood Wednesday afternoon. The worst damage occurred from the Martin Fortmeyer farm south of Highway 150 and extended northeast to the Bill Knode place. Several farms in this area suffered losses.
A very successful “Housing Tour” was conducted Monday under the auspices of the Marion County Advisory Committee. Approximately 125 visited seven demonstration homes in the eastern part of the county.
Attending a Scripture Memory Camp at Camp Fellowship southwest of Wichita from Monday to Thursday were J.D. Pankratz, Elda Pankratz, John Funk, Raymond Funk, Robert Morse, Paul Morse, Jimmie DeCatsye, and Dorothy and Larry Hiebert.
