The opening of the new St. Luke Hospital will mark a memorable advance in this community’s medical service. By comparison, Marion’s first hospital, located in the Old YMCA building at Main and Fifth streets, started by R.
C. Smith in 1907 with “four or five beds,” was just as memorable an advance over medical service offered at that time.
Pictured on the front page is an ingenious machine, an ensilage cutter, put together by Daniel E. Eitel of near Tampa. The machine is a self-propelled two-row cutter that will handle up to 30 tons of ensilage per hour. In the photo, Eitel and his helper, John C. Heiser, are busy filling a trench silo at the George Williams farm southeast of Marion.
Mrs. John Just entertained a number of girls Friday afternoon in celebration of Johnsie’s 13th birthday. Guests were Betty Mathews, Elda Pankratz, Diane and Lisa Vinduska, Pat Dixon, Jan Blackwelder, Margie Bernhardt, Margaret McClain, and Joyce Ubben.
Rev. and Mrs. S.D. Hower have moved to 623 S. Roosevelt, where they will reside during the construction of a new Evangelical church parsonage at 218 Elm St.
Mr. and Mrs. James Vogel are the parents of a son, James Stanley, born Sept. 29. The baby has an older sister, Susan LaVonne.
