Very little hope is held out for the survival of Navy Capt. Julian Greer and the nine other men aboard a large 4-motored Navy Privateer patrol bomber that has been missing in the vicinity of Seattle since Jan. 28.

Janice Riffel, Marion County’s entrant in the third annual state cherry pie contest, was third in the Manhattan “bake” this Monday.

Gail Merrill, who served on the Marion school board some time ago, was appointed Monday evening to fill out the term of Gus Newlon, who has resigned due to his job transfer. Other members of the board are president Sam Thole, David Wheeler and Leslie Powell.

This week’s St. Luke Hospital notes announce the birth of Ginger Lynn, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Will Helmer, born Jan. 30, and David Vernon, son of Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Waner, born Jan. 31.

Johnny Higgins of the Youngtown community met with an unusual and painful accident Saturday morning. He was hunting with his BB gun when he tripped and fell to the ground. The gun went off hitting and chipping one of his lower front teeth and the BB lodged in his tongue. He spent the night in St. Luke Hospital.

Patsy Harris has a position in the art department of the Kansas City, Kan., schools and began her new duties the first of the week.
