The summer athletic season starts with a bang this weekend, with all three main events getting underway. This includes baseball, with the local team entered in a four-team Cottonwood Valley League; softball, with the eight church-sponsored teams; and kids’ baseball, the Cookie League.

The annual Marion High School awards assembly was held last Friday morning. Scholarship awards went to seniors Marilyn Reh, valedictorian, and Nancy Broadstreet, salutatorian. Junior honor students were John Williams and Rowena Olsen; sophomore, David Montgomery and Kay Navrat; and freshmen, Elda Pankratz and Warren Gardner.

Mr. and Mrs. Donald King, Gary, Ronny and Wayne were among those who received invitations to a reception by the Hyde Park Company at the Lassen Hotel for the popular Hopalong Cassidy and his wife. The boys were especially thrilled to get to shake hands with their cowboy idol.

Mr. and Mrs. Joseph J. Meysing, Marion, announce the engagement of their daughter, Patricia Ann, to George Edward Waner, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Waner, Peabody.

Four trunk loads of Father Kapaun’s personal effects, robes and church equipment that were recently returned from Japan to the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Enos Kapaun, were sent this week to Sacred Heart College, Wichita. Provisions have been made there to preserve them and to put them on public display.
