City employees removed a large hackberry tree in the unused alleyway between the Jay Hargett and R.B. Harris homes. The tree fell over Wednesday afternoon almost blocking Locust Street.

There have been no new polio cases reported in Marion County recently. Only two relatively mild cases have been reported to date this year. Mrs. Reuben Koch, Ramona, is better and being treated at home. Little 5½-year-old Kristin Elaine Reid of Florence is being treated in St. Francis Hospital, Wichita, and is recovering satisfactorily.

Dr. P.J. Garrison this week ended his many years of official rain and weather observation and turned over the tools of the trade to Rendel Newsom. So, now the rainfall reports will read “according to Rendel Newsom.”

Mrs. W.H. Carpenter entertained Friday with a luncheon at Kingfisher’s Inn complimenting Mrs. Randolph Carpenter of Topeka, who leaves August 27 with her husband, for a trip around the world.

Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Hoisington, Parsons, announce the engagement of their daughter, Jane, to Donald Hayen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hayen. No wedding date has been set.
