Ground was broken at Wichita Saturday in the initial step in the construction of the Chaplain Emil Kapaun Memorial High School for Boys at Woodlawn and Central streets.

The new Marion youth center, “The Reservation,” started off with enthusiastic approval of local teen-agers last week and the sponsoring organizations hope to see it successfully continued and expanded.

Word has been received by Mr. and Mrs. John Williams from their son, Midshipman John Reed Williams at Annapolis, that he was successful in making the freshman football squad.

Herington High School football boosters, known as the “Redcaps” are planning to bring a caravan of about 600 persons to the Marion-Herington football game here on Oct. 14. Marion school officials are trying to locate additional portable bleachers to move in for the evening to accommodate the group from Herington.

Shirley Bredemeier as “Uncle Sam” took first place for decorated bikes on Old Settlers’ Day. Ried Crawford and Ed Sandwell, the “Mutt and Jeff” of the wheelbarrow gang, or the “Street Patrol” won first prize as a humorous entry.

Miss Dorothy Sandwell was honored at a miscellaneous shower at the home of Mrs. John Just Saturday evening. Mrs. Henry Collett, Mrs. Kenneth Sly and Miss Norma Sly were assisting hostesses.
