The wheat harvest in Marion County is adding up to be one of the most successful in many years. The average yield will be about 22 bushels per acre, compared with last year’s average of 13 and a 10-year average of 17.2.
Mrs. Bertha Mailen announced this week that she has leased the Del Mar Café from Ruby Laudner and will take over operation the first of July. The café will be closed for a week, but will re-open July 9 with Mrs. Mailen in charge and with Linda Covey remaining and Ann Davies added to the staff.
The Dickinson chain of moving picture theaters, of Kansas City, will resume management of the Kaw Theatre at Marion officially as of July 1.
Mrs. Joe Atherton entertained with a party for her son, Charles, Wednesday afternoon in celebration of his eighth birthday. Those present included Darold Longhofer, Bobby Hoch, John Thies, Wally Slusser, George Jackson, Bob Good, Sam Bernhardt, Bob Weber, Eddie Atherton, and Richard Hume.
A group of high school folks enjoyed a get-together at the recreation hall at the lake Thursday evening to bid farewell to David Montgomery who left Sunday for the Naval Academy at Annapolis. Mary Lou Conyers was hostess for the affair.
The first sweet corn we have heard of here is from the garden at the Wm. Buethe home. Rev. G. Carol Gilbert reports he has picked his first ripe tomato from his garden at the Evangelical church’s parsonage.
